In a heartwarming text conversation, an unnamed poster told their dad they suspected he was gay. Dad’s emotional response: “Do you have any idea how long I have agonized, feared, cried over this, and what you might think of me?” It’s a beautiful example of how extending a hand can help someone speak their truth.

Tatiana Lets the Cake Do the Talking

In April 2020, model and TikTok user Tatiana Ringsby posted a video in which she presents her parents with a cake that reads “Surprise, I’m bi!” After processing the text and confirming it’s not a joke, Mom and Dad shower Tatiana with love and hugs. What can’t cake do?

College Athletes Share Their Truth

In 2014, college sprinter Brad Neumann came out to a friend and fellow athlete at another school. The friend, Justin Rabon, surprised Brad by coming out to him in response. The two talked regularly, bonded over their shared experiences, and eventually fell in love.

Lil Nas X

Rapper Lil Nas X came out on Twitter in 2019. On the last day of pride month, he tweeted: "some of y'all already know, some of y'all don't care, some of y'all not gone fwm no more. but before this month ends i want y'all to listen closely to closure.” The lyrics of the song—and the rainbow colors on his album—were his unique way of opening up.

Mormon, Republican, and Gay

Utah County commissioner Nathan Ivie, a Mormon and Republican, came out as gay in 2019. He said he’d known it since he was 9 years old, and that he’d struggled for a long time. When he had the opportunity to photograph a same-sex wedding, Ivie realized: “Maybe I’m not broken.”

“You’re Calling Me

In a “crush challenge” TikTok, user Jordyn Sutton is selected as the victim who must call her crush. After some resistance, she dials. When a phone starts to ring in the car, the other girls look confused. Jordyn clarifies with “Yeah, I’m gay,” leaving her friend and apparent crush hilariously shocked.

Matthew Comes Out to His Mom

In a video recorded in 2011, YouTuber Matthew Christian came out to his mother. Once alone with her, Matthew struggles to get the words out. When mom successfully guesses he’s gay, she hugs him and says “I knew you were!” Matthew bursts into tears, and so do we.

Nat Geo Cover Girl

In 2017, 9-year-old Avery Jackson became the first transgender individual to appear on the cover of National Geographic. Though she was technically already out, her appearance on the magazine’s special “Gender Revolution” issue was a powerful coming out of its own.
